Two young democracies, both heirs to great civilizations, Italy and India established their first diplomatic relations in 1947, two years after the birth of the Italian Republic and in the year of Indian independence. It was in 1953 that the first visit of an Indian Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, to Italy took place, while in 1995 it was President Scalfaro who visited India. The largest Indian community in the European Union resides in Italy, followed by Germany and Spain, with approximately 160,000 people present on Italian soil.
