Challenges in Context and Insight Acquisition from Data Generated by Connected Products”

Abstract

As per Gartner 2014 hype cycle report for Emerging Technologies, the Internet of Things is presently poised at the peak of the inflated expectation curve with a 5-10 years time frame for maturity. Market research shows that the number of sensors in circulation today is around 18 billion. These sensors are continuously generating data. This data needs to be modeled, reasoned and transmitted to its final destination for the end user/service to make appropriate decisions or create value added services. These intermediate processes in relation to the context in which these products and services operate in the Internet is critical. In this paper, attempt is made to understand the different paradigms of data related context/insight awareness from an IoT perspective. The context/insight life cycle is defined and the critical functionalities existing in the lifecycle are imported. Based on these functionalities we carry out a survey of the current trends of connected products and services and evaluate the extent to which these functionalities are available, in these products and services.

To achieve full scalability in the IoT, a standardised architecture with a common set of service layer capabilities and open interfaces and API’s is suggested. In order to achieve ‘any app, any device, any network’, interoperability between devices, platforms, data formats, protocols and applications is a necessity.

As stated in [20], action design cycles build on existing theories and knowledge bases, but the use and implementation of the products, allow us to continuously develop insights in the most appropriate and relevant ways. Recognising this importance in the context of the fully connected product will scale up the speed and evolution of not just the product but also its life cycle management.
